It has long been said that “World War Z 2” will be released in cinemas in June 2017. But time passed and there is still no second zombie war in sight. In 2019 came the bad news that the zombie epic would not be continued after all. Other projects were paramount for Paramount, the mixed reviews of the first part could also have been a reason for the cancellation of the film. So is a sequel really off the table?
World War Z 2: When will the sequel start?
After a long silence, Jeremy Kleiner spoke up to the Hollywood Reporter, giving fans some hope. “Sometime. We love Max Brooks’ book. We love his universe. It doesn’t feel like World War Z is entirely over.” Kleiner is co-president of Brad Pitt‘s production company, Plan B Entertainment, along with Dede Gardner. The actor’s production company has already participated in the first part of the novel adaptation. So, despite all the complications, will World War Z 2 still happen?
Kleiner’s statements were made before the corona pandemic, but it is currently not known whether the project also had to suffer from the crisis. “World War Z 2” doesn’t seem to be within reach yet, but fans shouldn’t give up hope.
World War Z 2: A Long Production Road
As already mentioned, the sequel to the zombie film had long been ill-fated. Originally J.A. Bayona (“Peaky Blinders: Gangs of Birmingham”) will direct the camera, while Steven Knight (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”) was hired to write the screenplay. However, both dropped out of the project. However, this disappointing news was quickly replaced by good news. Because none other than “Seven” director David Fincher should take over the direction. But a reunion of old friends Brad Pitt and Fincher ultimately did not materialize.
Since the shooting was delayed again, neither the director nor the main actors could find the time. While Brad Pitt had his hands full with Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, David Fincher was busy with the second season of his Netflix series Mindhunter. Despite all these problems, Plan B Entertainment doesn’t want to give up the sequel to World War Z. They all describe themselves as big fans of Max Brooks’ book “Operation Zombie: Those Who Live Longer Die Later”.

China is the greatest market for Hollywood films, thus the sequel’s box revenue could suffer. The earliest a release date may be revealed, assuming Paramount approves the sequel, is in 2023 or 2024.
