Hemsworth and Waititi have explored possibilities for a sequel to Ragnarok by January 2018. Hemsworth, Waititi, Thompson, and Portman—who did not appear in Ragnarok—were all attached to return to the franchise when Love and Thunder was formally confirmed in July 2019. Waititi said that the picture would incorporate aspects from Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book series, in which Portman’s character Jane Foster takes on the mantle and powers of Thor while battling cancer. Waititi later described the project as a romantic picture once Robinson joined it in February 2020.

Filming in Sydney, Australia, began in January 2021 and ended in early June 2021. Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in the United States on May 6, 2022, as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Four.

Under the working title The Big Salad, principal filming began on January 26, 2021, at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming was postponed from its original start date of August 2020. In order to create a bespoke volume environment at Fox Studios Australia, Industrial Light & Magic utilized the same StageCraft virtual production technology used on the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian, which Waititi helmed one episode of. The new area has more LED panels and a greater resolution than The Mandalorian’s previous set.

Filming began in early February at Centennial Park in Sydney, with Klementieff, Gillan, Bautista, and Pratt finishing their sequences shortly after. Set images from early March showing Damon and Neill repeating their roles as the Asgardian characters Loki and Odin and Luke Hemsworth reprising his part as Thor in Ragnarok. Melissa McCarthy was also cast as an actress in the part of Hela, with her husband Ben Falcone in an unspecified capacity; these appearances were for a scene in which performers replicate events from Ragnarok. By the end of the month, Alexander had finished filming her sequences, while Goldblum had been confirmed to play the Grandmaster, and Russell Crowe had been announced to play Zeus in a “fun cameo.” In April, Crowe wrapped up filming on his sequences. Waititi stated in early May that the filming will last four weeks. In addition, cinematographer Barry “Baz” Idoine, who collaborated with Waititi on The Mandalorian, indicated that he was still working on the project and would be until the end of 2021. By the time filming finished on June 1, 2021, Neill had announced that singer Jenny Morris would star in the movie.
