Production

During World War II, two sisters strive to live and oppose the German occupation of France. TriStar Pictures purchased Kristin Hannah’s novel The Nightingale in March 2015 and engaged Ann Peacock to write the script and Elizabeth Cantillon to produce. Michelle MacLaren was recruited by TriStar on August 11, 2016, to direct and rewrite alongside John Sayles, however, she departed before the film’s completion.

Mélanie Laurent signed on to helm from a script by Dana Stevens in December 2019, with Cantillon still engaged to produce. Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning were cast in the roles of the sisters.

On October 26, 2020, principal photography began in Budapest, Hungary, and Los Angeles, California.

Release

TriStar announced the film’s release date on June 23, 2017, and it was set for August 10, 2018. TriStar announced on March 2, 2020, that the picture will be released on December 25, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, TriStar temporarily pulled the picture from theaters on April 24, 2020. TriStar delayed the film’s release date to December 22, 2021, on April 30, 2020.

TriStar rescheduled the film for December 23, 2022, on February 19, 2021. Netflix and The Walt Disney Company inked an agreement with Sony in April 2021 for the exclusive right to stream and broadcast future films, including this one, on Disney’s linear television networks following their theatrical and home media dates.
