THE MARVELS (2022) REVIEW
In July 2019, Marvel Studios announced intentions to produce a Captain Marvel sequel, and production began in January 2020, with McDonnell joining the cast and Larson slated to return. DaCosta was hired in August of that year, and Vellani and Parris were cast in December. Filming on the second unit began in New Jersey in mid-April 2021, with The Marvels being confirmed as the title in early May. Principal photography will begin in Buckinghamshire in mid-2021, with additional locations in Los Angeles and New Jersey.
As part of Phase Four of the MCU, The Marvels will be released in the United States on November 11, 2022.
Brie Larson, who plays Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel in Captain Marvel (2019), indicated an interest in a sequel before the film’s release. As Khan is modeled on Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel, producer Kevin Feige previously indicated that Khan will be brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following the release of Captain Marvel; Iman Vellani was subsequently cast as Khan in the Disney+ television series Ms. Marvel (2021). In March 2019, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige claimed the studio has some “really great” ideas for a sequel, which could be set in the 1990s like the original film or in the present day. Even if the sequel was set in the present, Lashana Lynch showed interest in resuming her role as Maria Rambeau. Feige revealed plans for a Captain Marvel sequel at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con in July.
Megan McDonnell entered discussions to write the script in January 2020, after previously working as a staff writer on Marvel Studios’ Disney+ series WandaVision (2021). Larson was confirmed to reprise her role as Danvers, however, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed and co-wrote the original picture, were not anticipated to return, with the studio seeking to replace them with a female director. The film was planned to be released in 2022 and was anticipated to be set in the present day. The film was set to be released on July 8, 2022, by Disney in April 2020, filling the slot previously reserved by the studio for an untitled Marvel film in July 2022.
Nia DaCosta was appointed as the film’s director in August of that year. Because DaCosta is the first Black woman to be recruited as a filmmaker by Marvel Studios, Justin Kroll termed this “another evidence of the studio’s commitment to diversity,” adding that the picture will certainly shatter the record for the most expensive film directed by a Black woman. Olivia Wilde and Jamie Babbit were also considered as directors for the film, although DaCosta was reported to have been the favorite for quite some time. DaCosta’s hire, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Richard Newby, “enjoys questioning preconceived conceptions about the relationship between characters and the lore behind tales,” and “enjoys testing preconceived notions about the relationship between characters and the narrative behind stories.” Newby also thought the film might tell Danvers’ tale through the eyes of Maria Rambeau’s daughter Monica, a modern-day Black woman. Captain Marvel 2 was confirmed by Kevin Feige in December 2020, with a revised release date of November 11, 2022. He confirmed DaCosta’s involvement, as well as the fact that Vellani would repeat her role as Khan in the film, as well as Teyonah Parris, who would reprise her role as Monica Rambeau from WandaVision. Parris was ecstatic to work with DaCosta again after Candyman (2021), to appear opposite Larson and Vellani, and to go more into Monica’s connection with Danvers, which was initially hinted at in WandaVision.
