Production
When Scott Derrickson chose to produce The Black Phone with his regular collaborator C. Robert Cargill, he was working with Marvel Studios on the Doctor Strange sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Because of Derrickson’s Marvel obligations, Cargill began exploring for alternative directors to direct the picture. As a result, Derrickson requested that Cargill postpone The Black Phone until he could direct it; Cargill agreed and vowed to wait. Soon after, Derrickson had a creative disagreement with Marvel and departed to concentrate on The Black Phone instead. In October 2020, it was announced that Derrickson will helm a Blumhouse Productions adaptation of Joe Hill’s short tale “The Black Phone,” based on a script co-written by Derrickson and Cargill, with Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw slated to appear. Jeremy Davies and Ethan Hawke were cast in unknown roles in January 2021. Under the working title Static, principal filming for The Black Phone began on February 9, 2021, at EUE/Screen Gems in Wilmington, North Carolina, and in the surrounding counties of New Hanover, Brunswick, and Columbus. James Ransone joined the cast the following month, and production wrapped on March 27.
