Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a new American television series produced by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet for the Paramount+ streaming service. As part of Kurtzman’s extended Star Trek Universe, it will premiere in 2022. It is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series and a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery. It follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise.
Pike, Number One, and Spock are played by Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck, respectively, repeating their roles from Discovery. These characters first appeared in the original Star Trek series, and these actors were cast in their respective roles for Discovery’s second season in 2019. Kurtzman indicated an interest in having the actors back in their own spin-off series after a strong fan response. By March 2020, construction had commenced, and it had been formally ordered in May. The principal cast, title, and creative team were announced at the time, including showrunners Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers. In addition to Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, Melissa Navia, and Bruce Horak, the series stars Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, Melissa Navia, and Bruce Horak. From February to October 2021, filming took place at CBS Stages Canada in Mississauga, Ontario, with extra filming in New Mexico.

Story by : Akiva Goldsman & Alex Kurtzman & Jenny Lumet
By the time the series was officially announced in May 2020, Goldsman had written the first episode and stated that the series will be more hopeful and episodic than Discovery and Picard, with a style more akin to the original series. He did say, though, that the series would keep using serialized narrative to establish character arcs.
By the end of July, a writers room for the series had been established, with stories for ten episodes already written. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic delaying the start of filming, Kurtzman revealed in August that “we have actually been able to go very ahead in writing” for the series. He believes that what drew viewers to the characters on Discovery was their “unwavering optimism,” and that the spin-off would focus on how Pike maintains his optimism after knowing about his sad future during the second season of Discovery.
Myers went on to discuss the series’ approach to episodic storytelling, saying that the writers intended to do something different “bring a current character sensibility to “Star Trek in the manner in which Star Trek tales have traditionally been presented” We’re going to present huge concepts science fiction stories in an episodic manner aboard a ship that’s heading to exotic new worlds. As a result, we have space to meet new aliens, see new spacecraft, and travel to new cultures.”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Casting
In the spin-off, Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck reprise their roles from Star Trek: Discovery. Pike, Leonard Nimoy, and Majel Barrett played Pike, Spock, and Number One, respectively, in the film “The Cage,” which starred Jeffrey Hunter as Pike, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, and Majel Barrett as Number One. Strange New Worlds will see the characters evolve from their Discovery representations to be closer to their original versions, which Peck called a “whole new challenge.” Pike and Number One are the Enterprise’s “parental figures,” according to Perez, especially to Spock, who is “not the wise, elderly Spock from The Original Series, [he is] still discovering himself.” With the commencement of filming, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, and Melissa Navia were confirmed as new series regulars.
Bush was cast in Barrett’s second original series role of Nurse Christine Chapel, Gooding took over Nyota Uhura from Nichelle Nichols, and Olusanmokun took over as Dr. M’Benga from Booker Bradshaw in September 2021. Chong and Navia have been cast as new characters La’an Noonien-Singh and Erica Ortegas, respectively, while Bruce Horak has been cast as Hemmer.
By December 2020, composer Jeff Russo of Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard had discussed Strange New Worlds with Kurtzman, including how it “should be addressed musically,” but whether Russo would be part in the spin-off’s score had yet to be established.
