To “destroy his charming image exhibited in his past parts,” Hwang claimed he cast Lee Jung-Jae as Gi-hun, a figure inspired by the organizers of the SsangYong Motor labor struggle of 2009 [ko] over mass layoffs. While concluding a shot in Mexico and prepping for New York Fashion Week, Jung Ho-new Yeon’s management business requested that she send a video to audition for the series. Despite the fact that this was her first acting audition and she had low expectations, Hwang stated, “‘This is the girl we want,’ I thought to myself as soon as I heard her audition tape from New York. My initial impression of her was that she was wild and untamed, like a wild horse ”

Both Gong Yoo and Lee Byung Hun had previously collaborated with Hwang on his films Silenced and The Fortress, and Hwang had requested both of them to have minor roles in Squid Game. “It was difficult to locate good international performers in Korea,” Hwang remarked of hiring Ali Abdul. Anupam Tripathi was chosen due to his emotive acting skills and proficiency in Korean.

Filming, Costume, and Set Design

The series was produced and filmed from June to October 2020, with a required month off owing to the continuing COVID-19 epidemic.

Because Netflix wanted to appeal to a worldwide audience, the graphics were stressed, and some of the rules of the children’s activities were reduced to prevent any language barriers. The vibrant scenery and costumes were created to resemble a fantastical realm. To eliminate individuality and accentuate the contrast between the two groups, the players and troops each wear a unique color. The players’ green tracksuits were inspired by 1970s sports attire known as training book (Korean: ).

The maze-like hallways and staircases were inspired by M. C. Escher’s four-dimensional stair designs. Ant colonies inspired the intricate network of tunnels connecting the arena, dorm, and administrative office.

The majority of the sets were a mix of real and chroma key backdrops. The set for the Glass Stepping Stones sequences, for example, was just 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) from the ground, with chroma key screens used in post-production to approximate the height. This was far enough off the ground during filming to make the performers uneasy, which added to the drama. The set for the Marbles game took the most time to create, with a combination of realism and fakery to reflect the life and death aspect of the game itself.

Younghee, a figure that featured on the covers of Korean textbooks in the 1970s and 1980s, inspired the robot doll in the first episode, “Red Light, Green Light,” and her haircut was influenced by Hwang’s daughter’s. In Korean, the doll singsongs “Mugunghwa Flower Has Blossomed,” alluding to the hibiscus syriacus, South Korea’s national flower.

A street seller from Daehangno produced the dalgona used in “The Man with the Umbrella.”

Seongapdo, located in Ongjin, was the location for the show’s filming.

In September 2021, a duplicate of the doll featured in the show was displayed on Ortigas Avenue in Quezon City, Philippines.

At Seoul’s Itaewon station, a more complete set replica was on display. However, because of COVID-19 quarantine regulations, the display was forced to close early.

On the 2nd and 3rd of October, a squid game pop-up store appeared in Paris, and anyone who got the proper form from the dalgona in one minute and 30 seconds might win a free one-month Netflix membership.

Squid Game (2021)

The concert was well-received by critics. According to review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the series has received good reviews from 91 percent of 45 critics, with an average rating of 8.2/10. “Squid Game’s uncompromising violence is not for the faint of heart,” according to the website’s critics, “yet incisive social satire and a surprisingly sensitive core will keep viewers riveted to the screen – even if it’s while watching between their fingers.” The series has a weighted average score of 69 out of 100 on Metacritic, signifying “generally good reviews” based on 11 reviewers.

The show’s idea, according to Decider’s Joel Keller, was innovative. He regarded the story as “a compact narrative and a plot that has the potential to be dramatic and intriguing” while writing about it. Keller ended by saying, “LISTEN TO IT ONLINE. Squid Game takes a novel concept and turns it into a gripping drama; we hope the season continues to build on the intensity we experienced in the closing 20 minutes.” “Overall, this is still a viciously entertaining slam dunk from Netflix Korea, which is sure to be loved throughout the world as its predecessors were,” said Pierce Conran of the South China Morning Post, who gave the series 4.5 out of 5 stars.

“Thematic brilliance aside, Squid Game is also a white-knuckle watch, due to its visceral competitive element,” said Hidzir Junaini of NME, who gave the series four out of five stars. The Globe and Mail’s John Doyle characterized the series as “Its force lies in its knowledge that money equals survival,” he said, adding, “a daring, dark, ambitious narrative, at times touching and at others scary.” This isn’t a dystopian novel like The Hunger Games. This is modern life in all of its perplexing ugliness ”

The series “presents a visually arresting variation on themes seen plenty of times before,” according to CNN’s Brian Lowry, “which includes tapping into the class divide – and the rich essentially preying on the poor and destitute – at a time when the audience might be more receptive to that message.” The program was compared positively to the 2019 South Korean film Parasite by Henry Wong of The Guardian, and it exploited the “present-day, very real wealth disparity” in South Korea as a backdrop to keep viewers engaged in the characters.

The series was also compared positively to Parasite by Caitlin Clark of the American socialist journal Jacobin, who claimed it “shreds the capitalist illusion that hard labor ensures success.” The series was hailed as “an outstanding summary of how predatory capitalism works” by Melanie McFarland of the American leftist website Salon.com.

The series received significant backlash upon its initial release due to its resemblance to the 2014 Japanese film As the Gods Will. Squid Game, like that manga, contains hazardous versions of children’s games like “Daruma-san ga koronda,” the Japanese equivalent of Red Light, Green Light. In response to plagiarism charges, director Hwang Dong-hyuk said that he began writing the script in 2008 and that any similarities between the two films, which he was made aware of during production, were coincidental. He said that Japanese comics and anime, such as Battle Royale and Liar Game, had influenced him.
