Spencer is a psychological drama film directed by Pablo Larran and written by Steven Knight that was released in 2021. Princess Diana’s (Kristen Stewart) choice to divorce Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) and quit the British royal family is fictionalized in this film. Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, and Sean Harris also feature.

Spencer had its world debut at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, and was released theatrically in the United Kingdom and the United States on November 5, 2021. The film garnered mostly excellent reviews from critics, who praised Stewart’s acting in particular.

Spencer (2021) Synopsis

Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ marriage has been dormant for a long time. Despite rumors of extramarital romances and divorce, the Christmas celebrations at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate are set to be peaceful. There’s shooting and hunting, as well as eating and drinking. Diana is well-versed in the game. This year, though, things will be very different. SPENCER is a fictitious account of what may have occurred during those tragic days.

Production

On June 17, 2020, Pablo Larran was revealed as the director of Spencer, a film starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana. On June 26, 2020, it was announced that Neon had paid more than $4 million for the rights to release the picture in the United States. The film will be distributed in the United Kingdom and Germany by STX Entertainment and DCM Film Distribution.

Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris joined the ensemble in January 2021 in the Schlosshotel Kronberg in Germany. The Schloss Marquardt at Marquardt, north of Potsdam, and Nordkirchen Castle were also used as filming sites. Production continued to the United Kingdom for the last stretch of filming on March 25, with Jack Farthing joining the cast as Prince Charles, and the film was completed on April 27, 2021. The score was written by Jonny Greenwood. Mercury KX released the score on November 12th, 2021.
