
Ron’s Gone Wrong is a 2021 computer-animated science-fiction comedy directed by Sarah Smith and Jean-Philippe Vine (in his feature directing debut), co-directed by Octavio E. Rodriguez, and written by Peter Baynham and Smith. The picture features Zach Galifianakis, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ed Helms, Justice Smith, Rob Delaney, Kylie Cantrall, Ricardo Hurtado, and Olivia Colman. It is Locksmith Animation’s debut film. DNEG was responsible for the animation.
Ron’s Gone Wrong had its world premiere on October 9, 2021, at the 2021 BFI London Film Festival, and was theatrically released in the United Kingdom on October 15 and in the United States on October 22, 2021, by 20th Century Studios, serving as the studio’s first animated film to be released since the closure of Blue Sky Studios on April 10, 2021. The picture made $46.8 million worldwide and mainly garnered good critical reviews.
Ron’s Gone Wrong (2021) Synopsis
The story of Barney, a socially awkward middle-schooler, and Ron, his new walking, talking, digitally-connected device, which is supposed to be his “Best Friend out of the Box,” is told by Twentieth Century Studios and Locksmith Animation. Ron’s hilarious malfunctions, set against the backdrop of the social media age, launch them into an action-packed journey in which boy and robot come to terms with the wonderful messiness of true friendship.

Music
Henry Jackman, a British composer, provided the film’s original score.
On August 19, 2021, it was revealed that Liam Payne has written an original song for the film called “Sunshine.” On August 27, 2021, the song was officially released.
The film’s music will be released by Walt Disney Records, making it the first soundtrack from a 20th Century Studios film to be published by the company.
Production
Locksmith signed a multi-year production contract with 20th Century Fox in September 2017, under which the studio will distribute Locksmith’s films under the 20th Century Fox Animation label, with the goal of releasing a picture every 12–18 months. Ron’s Gone Wrong, the debut feature from Locksmith Animation, was unveiled on October 12, 2017. The film’s co-directors would be Alessandro Carloni and Jean-Phillipe Vine, and the script would be written by Peter Baynham and Locksmith co-founder Sarah Smith. As a digital production partner, DNEG was brought on board. On the same day, Baynham and Elisabeth Murdoch were named executive producers.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, animation and voice acting were done remotely.
Marketing
Toys based on the film, including plushies and action figures, are being developed by TOMY in collaboration with Disney and Locksmith.
Release
In October 2017, it was announced that the film would be released on November 6, 2020. The film’s release date was pushed back to February 26, 2021, in November 2019. As a consequence of the COVID-19 epidemic, the film was postponed to April 23, 2021 in May 2020. The film was subsequently pushed out to October 22, 2021 in 3D on January 22, 2021. On October 9, 2021, the film made its global debut at the BFI London Film Festival. The film was shown at the 36th Guadalajara International Film Festival on the same day. On the day of its release, October 22, the film also had a special surprise showing at the El Capitan Theatre. The film will be shown exclusively in cinemas for 45 days before being released on digital platforms.
It is the only Locksmith film distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures under the 20th Century Studios label, since future Locksmith Animation films will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures after a multi-year production arrangement signed with the studio in 2019.
Box Office
Ron’s Gone Wrong had made $17.6 million in the United States and Canada, and $29.2 million in other territories as of November 9, 2021, for a global total of $46.8 million.
Ron’s Gone Wrong was released alongside Dune in the United States and Canada, and its opening weekend was expected to make roughly $10 million from 3,065 cinemas. On its opening day, the picture grossed $2.3 million, including $260,000 from Thursday night screenings. It debuted in fifth place with $7.3 million. The picture dropped 48 percent in its second weekend, grossing $3.7 million.
The film grossed £868,053 in the United Kingdom on its opening weekend of October 15–17. The next weekend, it grossed £562,540. The next weekend, it grossed £609,119.
Reaction
The film has an approval rating of 80% on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, with a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating based on 89 reviews, with an average rating of 6.60/10. “It isn’t the first animated picture to face technology creep, but Ron’s Gone Wrong gets it right in terms of finding an enjoyable mix between humor and emotion.” The film has a Metacritic score of 65 out of 100 based on 23 reviewers, indicating “generally good reviews.” Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore scored the picture an “A” on a scale of A+ to F.
