Production

These unlikely heroes will embark on a perilous last-ditch journey into space, abandoning all they hold dear, only to discover that our Moon is not what we thought it was. Roland Emmerich was revealed as writing and directing the picture in May 2019, with a budget of $140 million, making it one of the most costly independent films ever. The film’s American distribution rights were bought by Lionsgate, while the foreign distribution rights were obtained by AGC International.

Josh Gad and Halle Berry were cast in May 2020, followed by Patrick Wilson and Charlie Plummer in June. Due to schedule problems, Stanley Tucci, John Bradley, Donald Sutherland, and Eme Ikwuakor were added to the cast in October, with Bradley replacing Gad. Filming began in Montreal in October 2020, after being scheduled to begin in the spring. In January 2021, Michael Pea, Carolina Bartczak, Maxim Roy, and Stephen Bogaert were added to the cast, with Pea filling in for Tucci, who was unable to attend owing to COVID-19 travel limitations.
