Casting

When Wright was a member of the US Dramatic Jury at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, when The Witch opened, he became aware of Anya Taylor-Joy. Shortly after, he met Taylor-Joy in Los Angeles, where he proposed her the premise for Last Night in Soho. He had Taylor-Joy in mind for the character of Eloise at first, but after reading a draft of the script, he changed his mind and asked her to play Sandie. The casting of Taylor-Joy was revealed in February of this year. Shortly after, Thomasin McKenzie and Matt Smith were cast. McKenzie drew Wright’s notice with her “naturalistic” performance in the film Leave No Trace, which he praised (2018).

In June, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, Rita Tushingham, Michael Ajao, and Synnve Karlsen joined the ensemble. Last Night in Soho was Rigg’s final film role, as she died shortly after the film’s completion.

Wright described working with Rigg as “a fantastic experience” and claimed he was filming with her “right up until the end.”  Margaret Nolan, who died in October 2020, makes her final cinematic appearance.

Filming

Filming began on May 23, 2019, and ended on August 30, 2019. Additional filming began on June 24, 2020, and ended on August 5, 2020, according to images shared on Wright’s Instagram account.

Music

Sequences in the film were inspired by some of the songs. When Wright heard the Graham Bond Organization’s cover of “Wade In The Water,” he “would immediately start visualizing that initial dream.” With its dramatic strings, Cilla Black’s “You’re My World” brought up “the type of tone and mood.” The majority of the songs chosen were from the 1960s. “Happy House” by Siouxsie and the Banshees from the 1980s was also chosen by Wright because “the production on that song is phenomenal” and because it suits a “moment in the movie where they are at a student union Halloween party.” Wright also mentioned “I enjoy songs that become well-known in a new context. As an example, we utilize James Ray’s original “Got My Mind Set on You,” which is better known as the George Harrison cover. The Weeknd sampled “Happy House,” so a lot of people are familiar with it.”

Taylor-Joy gave a great performance “It’s not every day you’re invited to record many versions of a famous song,” says Petula Clark in the film. I fell in love with music because of the sounds of the 1960s, so I was ecstatic when Edgar invited me to try it out “. On double vinyl, the soundtrack was released.
