Dexter: New Blood is a new American crime drama mystery miniseries that will be broadcast on November 7, 2021. The miniseries will be a resurrection of the original series, and it will take place ten years after the events of the eighth-season finale, which aired in 2013. The limited series will premiere in October 2020 on Showtime.
Dexter: New Blood (2021) Synopsis
Dexter Morgan has moved to the fictional tiny town of Iron Lake, New York, ten years after the original series’ finale, and is masking his identity as Jim Lindsay, a local shopkeeper. He’s formed a friendship with Angela Bishop, the town’s police chief, and he’s managed to keep his serial killer tendencies at bay. Dexter is concerned that the “dark passenger” within him will emerge as a result of a series of events in the Iron Lake area.

According to lead actor Michael C. Hall, the series finale of Dexter, in which Dexter departs Miami and ends up as a lumberjack in Oregon, was divisive among the show’s fans. He stated, “I believe the ending was at best mysterious to the audience. ‘Perplexing,’ ‘exasperating,’ ‘frustrating,’ and so on are some of the negative adjectives that come to mind.” Fans had questioned Hall whether there would be a sequel to the show in the eight years since the finale aired. Clyde Phillips, who had left the show after season 4, had seen those questions posed to Hall and had considered ways to continue Dexter as a form of redemption over time, but couldn’t come up with an appropriate path.
On July 1, 2019, Showtime president Gary Levine approached Phillips. Levine told Phillips that he thought it was time to bring Dexter back and asked if Phillips could come up with a plan. Phillips penned a rough draft, which he presented with Hall, who was enthralled by the concept.
Phillips noted that the finale was appropriate for the time it was broadcast, as there were a number of real-life serial killers residing in Oregon and neighboring states in 2013. Dexter was also surrounded by chainsaws, according to Phillips, which served as a daily reminder of how his mother died. Phillips decided to include a huge time jump, about a decade after the events of the original series ended, because he was dubious of the intent of the ending. While Dexter is still a lumberjack, he has relocated to Iron Lake, New York, a fictional hamlet.
Because there was a huge discontinuity in the serialization of the tale, Phillips did not consider the miniseries to be the ninth season. The writers decided how the ten-episode miniseries would end and wrote backward from there as they created the scripts. “This one’s ending will be stunning, shocking, surprising, unexpected, and without jinxing anything, I will say that the finish of this new season that we’re doing will blow up the internet,” Phillips said.
The Dexter revival was ordered as a limited series with ten episodes on October 14, 2020, with Hall in his original role and Phillips as showrunner. Marcos Siega will helm the first six episodes of the limited series, as well as serve as an executive producer with Hall, John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Bill Carraro, and Scott Reynolds, on November 17, 2020. It is set to broadcast on Showtime on November 7, 2021.
Clancy Brown, Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, Jack Alcott, and David Magidoff were added to the main cast in January 2021. Jamie Chung and Oscar Wahlberg were cast in recurring roles on February 11, 2021. In a cameo appearance on June 28, 2021, John Lithgow returned to the cast to reprise his role as Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer. Jennifer Carpenter, who played Dexter’s sister Debra in the original series, will return her role in some manner for the limited series on July 13, 2021. Carpenter is confirmed to return as Dexter’s “imaginary iteration of Debra” as a series regular on August 24, 2021, according to Deadline.
The show began filming in February 2021, with the majority of the episodes being shot in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, which served as a stand-in for Iron Lake. The producers wanted a substantial amount of snow in those pictures, including a nearby frozen lake, thus outside filming had to be planned around the weather. Interior filming began in July 2021 and lasted for fifty days.
