Avatar 4 is one of four proposed sequels to the film Avatar, which was released in 2009. In December 2026, it will be published.
Cameron has indicated that the financial success of Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 will determine the fate of Avatar 4. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are being produced, according to Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger, but have not yet been formally greenlit by Disney.
On May 7, 2019, Disney-Fox announced that Avatar 4 and 5 will be released in theaters on December 19, 2025, and December 17, 2027, respectively. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, James Cameron stated on July 23, 2020, that all Avatar sequels will be postponed by one year. Avatar 4 will now be released on December 18, 2026.
The plot is meant to stand alone, however, it will be part of a larger meta-narrative that spans Avatar 2 to 5.

AVATAR 4 (2026) TITLE
Because Jake Sully is no longer an Avatar at the conclusion of the first film, James Cameron has previously suggested that no sequel will include “Avatar” in the title; “Avatar 4” is most likely merely a placeholder term. According to a BBC report from November 2018, the title would be Avatar: The Tulkun Rider. In a February 2018 ET interview, Cameron emphasized that the title was only one of several being considered and that the sequel titles hadn’t been decided yet.
Cameron speculated during early talks on the film in 2012 that it may be a prequel rather than a sequel. However, it has been referred to be a sequel in all subsequent interviews; the prequel is most likely a distinct project. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana have renewed their contracts for three more movies. Sam Worthington stated in October 2013 that the three sequels will be shot in order commencing in the fall of 2014.
WRITING AND DELAYS
In August 2013, Shane Salerno was revealed as the film’s screenwriter. Scriptwriting continued at least until May of 2015. Cameron had accidentally written four sequels’ worth of material at that point, according to an interview with James Horner, who was then tapped for the soundtrack, which needed to be whittled down to three, according to an interview with James Horner, who was then tapped for the soundtrack. However, a fourth sequel was announced in 2017, with the film’s release dates being further postponed.
In September 2017, James Cameron said that work on Avatar 4 and 5 will begin following the release of Avatar 3, as part of the back-to-back filming of all four Avatar sequels. In the same way that Avatar 2 and 3 were shot together and placed through post-production sequentially, Avatar 4 and 5 are planned to be shot together and put through post-production sequentially.
Effects of Disney-Fox Acquisition
During the Disney-Fox merger in 2018 and early 2019, some doubt was put on the project when Disney announced that 4 and 5 were no longer greenlit and would be dependent on the financial performance of 2 and 3. This changed in May 2019, when Disney’s 2020-2027 slate was released, giving the film a new release date of December 2025.
During a February 2019 interview with Collider, Jon Landau revealed that some performance capture for Avatar 4 was previously accomplished during the performance capture filming of Avatar 2 and 3. Landau highlighted this in a February 2019 interview with the Los Angeles Times, describing the performance capture for Avatar 2, 3, and parts of 4 as “primary capture.”
