ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA (2023) REVIEW
The film stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne, as well as Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, and Jonathan Majors. Peyton Reed directs the film, which is based on a script by Jeff Loveness. In November 2019, it was announced that a third Ant-Man film will be made, with Reed and Rudd reprising their roles. By April 2020, Loveness had been hired, and work on the film had begun amid the COVID-19 epidemic. In December 2020, the film’s title and additional cast members were revealed. Filming began in Turkey in early February 2021, with further filming taking place in San Francisco in mid-June, ahead of primary photography beginning at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire at the end of July. The shooting is scheduled to continue in Atlanta until 2022.
As part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will be published in the United States on February 17, 2023.
Paul Rudd as Scott Lang / Ant-Man: A former petty criminal and an Avenger with a suit that allows him to shrink or expand in size while enhancing his strength.
Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne / Wasp: Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne’s daughter, who inherits a similar suit and the Wasp mantle from her mother.
Michael Douglas as Hank Pym: He’s a bug hunter, physicist, and a former spy.
Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet van Dyne: She is the wife of Pym, mother of Hope, and the original wasp, who has been missing for 30 years in the Quantum Realm.
Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang: The daughter of Scott Lang. Emma Fuhrmann, who played the role in Avengers: Endgame, has been replaced by Newton (2019).
Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror: A “multiverse time-traveling enemy”, a variation on the alternate timeline of Loki’s character He Who Remains (2021), creator of the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Loki head writer Michael Waldron characterized Kang as the MCU’s “next great cross-movie villain.”
Before the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, director Peyton Reed noted that there are elements in the film that allow a lot of room for a potential third chapter of the franchise. He emphasized the Quantum Realm, which was introduced in Ant-Man (2015) and expanded on in Ant-Man and the Wasp; Reed stated that the earlier films were “just dipping our toes into it.” He went on to say that he and Marvel Studios were optimistic about a third picture and have explored various plotlines for one. Although Evangeline Lilly had not heard of any plans for her character Hope van Dyne / Wasp following her involvement in Avengers: Endgame, (2019) Michael Douglas, who plays Hank Pym, stated in February 2019 that informal conversations for a sequel to Ant-Man and the Wasp had taken place.
Lilly remarked “Hope van Dyne is in the midst of her adventure. By no means do I believe her path is done.” In October, Michelle Pfeiffer expressed interest in reprising the role of Janet van Dyne in the sequel, while Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was asked about Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang/AntMan’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (MCU) after Endgame and replied that “the pieces were purposefully arranged” at the end of this film, with some being “off the board” and others, like AntMan, “always on top [chess board, so] you never know”. When asked if he would reprise the role in a third Ant-Man film or as part of another Marvel Cinematic Universe series, Rudd acknowledged both ideas have been considered.
At the beginning of November 2019, Reed officially signed on to direct the third Ant-Man picture. Lang would be played by Rudd, with Lilly and Douglas also returning. Filming was set to commence in January 2021, with a 2022 release date expected. Despite Marvel’s interest in fresh filmmakers offering various views on its heroes for each picture, Reed was recruited again because executives believed he had “a solid handle on the Ant-Man world and wanted to see him return to finish his trilogy.”
Jeff Loveness was hired to create the film’s script during “the early days of Hollywood’s closure” due to the COVID-19 epidemic, and by April 2020, he had started working on it. Due to the impact of the epidemic on all film projects, it was no longer apparent when production on the film would commence. During the pandemic, Reed stated that work on the film was still going on in August 2020.
Despite concerns that her role would be cut following contentious statements regarding the epidemic, he claimed Lilly will continue to have equal billing in the picture with Rudd since she is “a very, very essential component” of the Ant-Man and the Wasp relationship. Reed went on to say that the story for the third picture had been “cracked,” but “nothing was official yet,” and that it would be a “larger, more expansive movie than the first two with a completely different visual framework” than the previous two.
Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Ersoy, stated on February 4, 2021, that filming on the film had begun in the country’s Cappadocia area, with further locations to be determined. Tip “T.I.” Harris, who played Dave in the previous two Ant-Man films, said in early March that he will not be reprising his role. This occurred after sexual assault claims against Harris and his wife Tameka Cottle surfaced in late February, although Variety stated that the two incidents were unrelated, and Harris was never scheduled to return for the sequel. Marvel Studios stated in early May 2021 that the film will be released on February 17, 2023. Rudd and Douglas flew to England in mid-June to prepare for filming. On June 19 and 20, filming for exterior shots and backdrop plates took place at the San Francisco Police Department Central Station in North Beach, San Francisco, featuring footage of the station’s interior, the building’s outward perspective, and downtown San Francisco. Corey Stoll would reprise his character as Darren Cross / Yellowjacket from Ant-Man in “some shape” for Quantumania, according to Joanna Robinson of Vanity Fair.
With the working title Dust Bunny, principal photography began on July 26, 2021, at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. For the film, Reed is using Industrial Light & Magic’s StageCraft virtual production technology, which he used when directing episodes of the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian. The COVID-19 epidemic forced the postponement of principal photography, which was scheduled to begin in January 2021. It was planned to take place between May 31 and September 24 at the time. Will Htay was in charge of the production design. Filming is anticipated to take place in Atlanta as well, with the actors returning to San Francisco in 2022.
